Will AI replace mechanical engineers in Singapore?
AI tools can already speed up much of the desk work mechanical engineers do, such as drafting design options, running simulations, checking results and writing up reports. Some of the routine modelling and analysis is likely to move to software. People are still needed to test real parts, validate designs in the field, fit systems together on site and judge what is safe and practical. Someone also has to take responsibility for the final design.
Why it scores 7
Mechanical engineers rely heavily on digital tools (CAD, FEA simulations, analysis software) for design, optimization, and problem-solving—tasks increasingly amenable to AI assistance. However, the role requires hands-on testing, field validation, physical system integration, and creative judgment that create meaningful barriers to full automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What mechanical engineers can do
Use AI for first-draft designs
Try AI tools on early concept work and routine analysis, then check every result yourself. You stay accountable for the design, so learn where the tools make mistakes.
Build more hands-on testing experience
Spend time on prototypes, test rigs and site visits. Real-world testing and fault-finding are the parts software cannot do for you.
Strengthen your design judgement
Practise weighing cost, safety, manufacturability and maintenance when choosing between options. Engineers who can explain why a design is right will stay more valuable than those who only produce drawings. SkillsFuture can help you find ways to build these skills.
