Will AI replace operations research analysts in Singapore?
AI will probably not replace operations research analysts in Singapore, but it will change the job a great deal. Tools can already clean data, suggest model types, run optimisations, draw charts and draft reports, so much of the routine technical work is moving to software and teams may need fewer people for the same output. A person is still needed to decide what problem is worth solving, check that a model is sound, weigh business trade-offs and explain results to the people who must act on them.
Why it scores 8
Operations research analysts perform fundamentally digital work—data analysis, mathematical modeling, optimization, and computational problem-solving—all conducted on computers, which creates inherent exposure to AI. AI tools can automate data preprocessing, suggest model architectures, run optimizations, generate visualizations, and draft reports, while also enabling significant productivity multipliers (fewer analysts needed for the same output). However, the role remains below maximum exposure because problem formulation, business judgment, stakeholder communication, and model validation still require human expertise.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What operations research analysts can do
Practise framing the problem before modelling
Spend more time with managers and operators to understand what they need to decide. Software can run a model, but it cannot tell which question matters to the business.
Use AI tools for your routine analysis
Try them on data cleaning, first model drafts and report writing, and learn where they go wrong. Knowing what to trust and what to redo makes you faster and safer.
Build your model checking skills
Get good at testing assumptions, spotting bad data and explaining why a result may be wrong. This validation work stays with a person and becomes more valuable as more output is machine-made.
