Will AI replace embedded systems engineers in Singapore?
AI will change embedded systems engineering a great deal, but it is unlikely to replace the engineers in Singapore any time soon. Coding assistants can already draft firmware, write test cases, produce documentation and help find bugs, so much of the routine writing and checking is moving to software. People are still needed to understand how the hardware behaves, test on real devices and port equipment, and take responsibility when a fault could affect safety or operations.
Why it scores 8
Embedded systems engineers work primarily on digital deliverables (code, firmware, design specifications) where AI coding assistants, design tools, and automated testing directly amplify productivity. Port systems engineering specifically involves automation and control logic—areas where AI accelerates both development and troubleshooting. The main constraint is the need for specialized hardware knowledge and validation on real systems, which moderates the score from 9 to 8.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What embedded systems engineers can do
Use AI assistants for routine code
Let them draft boilerplate, driver code, unit tests and documentation, then review the output closely. Checking generated code against the real hardware is the skill that keeps your work trusted.
Deepen your hardware and systems knowledge
Spend more time on timing, power limits, sensors, interfaces and how control logic behaves in the field. AI tools are weakest where the problem depends on the physical system in front of you.
Take ownership of validation and safety
Volunteer for hardware-in-the-loop testing, fault analysis and sign-off on changes to live systems. Look at SkillsFuture options in areas such as functional safety or AI-assisted testing to back this up.
