Will AI replace interaction designers in Singapore?
Will AI replace interaction designers in Singapore? Not entirely, but a good deal of the routine work is moving to software. AI tools can already draft wireframes, suggest layouts and produce variations of screens quickly. A person is still needed to understand what users feel and need, to weigh business goals against those needs, and to decide which solution is right after testing it with real people. Teams may need fewer hands for the same project, so the role is likely to shift towards judgement and research.
Why it scores 7
Interaction design is entirely digital work, making it inherently vulnerable to AI-assisted tools (design generation, pattern synthesis, wireframing automation). However, the role requires strategic human judgment—understanding user psychology, translating business goals into nuanced experiences, and iterating on solutions based on user research—which remains difficult to automate. AI will reshape the work by increasing designer productivity and reducing headcount per project, but the strategic design thinking and empathy core to the role creates a ceiling on full automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What interaction designers can do
Use AI for first drafts of screens
Let tools produce rough wireframes and layout options, then spend your time choosing and refining the best ones. This frees you for the parts of the work that need judgement.
Get closer to real users
Run interviews and usability sessions yourself and learn to read what people do against what they say. Software can summarise notes, but it cannot sit with a confused user and notice why.
Practise explaining design decisions
Get better at tying a design choice to a business goal and to what users need. Colleagues and clients rely on you to justify the direction, which AI output cannot do for you.
