Will AI replace marine engineers in Singapore?
AI will not replace marine engineers in Singapore any time soon, but much of the desk work is already changing. Software can now help with design, simulation and engineering calculations, and it can test many options quickly. A person still has to inspect vessels, find faults in running systems, commission equipment and make safety decisions, because those jobs need physical presence and accountable judgement.
Why it scores 7
Marine engineers work heavily in digital design, simulation, and analysis—core functions where AI excels at optimizing designs and automating complex engineering calculations. However, on-site vessel inspections, real-time troubleshooting of operational systems, safety compliance decisions, and hands-on commissioning provide meaningful protection against full automation. The role is high-exposure due to its computational intensity but not 'very high' because critical physical presence and human judgment remain essential.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What marine engineers can do
Use AI tools for design and analysis
Try them on the calculations and simulations you do most often. Always check the results against your own understanding of how a vessel behaves.
Build your hands-on troubleshooting record
Time on board, at the yard and on commissioning work is the part software cannot do. Keep taking on jobs where you diagnose real faults in real machinery.
Get stronger at safety and compliance calls
Practise explaining why a design or repair is safe, and where the rules leave room for judgement. Owners and regulators need a named person to stand behind that decision. SkillsFuture support may help with learning in this area.
