Will AI replace statisticians in Singapore?
AI tools can already run routine tests, fit standard models, clean data and draft the first version of a report, so a lot of the repeat analysis work is moving to software. People are still needed to choose the right method for a messy question, check whether the data can be trusted, and explain what the results mean for a real decision. When something unusual comes up, someone has to judge it and take responsibility for the answer.
Why it scores 8
Statisticians perform fundamentally digital work—data analysis, statistical testing, and modeling—that AI can increasingly automate for routine tasks through machine learning and pattern recognition. However, designing appropriate statistical methods, interpreting results in business context, and handling novel analytical problems require domain expertise and judgment that remains harder to fully automate, placing this solidly in the very high but not maximum exposure tier.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What statisticians can do
Let software draft the routine analysis
Use AI tools for data cleaning, standard tests and first-pass code, then check every output yourself. Your value is in spotting where the tool has quietly gone wrong.
Get better at framing the question
Spend more time with the people who need the answer, and work out what decision it will support. Choosing what to measure and how is harder to hand to a tool than running the numbers.
Practise explaining results to non-specialists
Write up findings in plain words, including what the data cannot tell you and where the uncertainty lies. Clear, honest explanation helps decision makers trust your work, and SkillsFuture options can help if you want structured practice.
