Will AI replace electrical engineers in Singapore?
AI will change a lot of what electrical engineers do on screen, but it is unlikely to replace them outright in Singapore. Software can already help with drafting designs, running circuit simulations, checking calculations and writing up technical documents, so much of that routine work will go faster. People are still needed to test equipment, find faults on site, judge real-world limits, and take responsibility for safety and compliance, where a mistake can hurt someone.
Why it scores 7
Electrical engineers perform substantial computer-based work (CAD design, circuit simulation, technical analysis) that AI can enhance significantly, placing them at the high-exposure floor. However, the role requires hands-on testing, site troubleshooting, understanding of physical constraints, and specialized domain expertise in safety and compliance that AI cannot easily replace, preventing the higher exposure scores (8–9) reserved for purely digital roles like software engineers.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What electrical engineers can do
Let AI draft, then check it yourself
Use AI tools for first-pass drawings, calculations and reports, and review every output against what you know. Your judgement on whether a design will work safely is the part that carries the value.
Build your hands-on troubleshooting skills
Time spent on site, testing equipment and tracing faults is the work software cannot do for you. Volunteer for commissioning and fault-finding jobs to keep this skill sharp.
Deepen your safety and compliance knowledge
Know the standards and rules behind your designs well enough to explain and defend them. Look at what SkillsFuture offers in your area to keep that knowledge current.
