Will AI replace merchandising and category executives in Singapore?

AI tools can already read sales trends, forecast demand, suggest prices and draft which products to stock, so much of the routine analysis in this job is moving to software. One person using these tools can cover much more ground than before, which will change how many people a team needs for the same work. People are still needed to set brand direction, judge whether a suggestion fits the shop or the customer, and handle supplier and store relationships. A high score means the daily work will change a lot, not that every role will disappear.

Why it scores 8

The role is fundamentally digital and data-driven, centered on analyzing sales trends, demand forecasting, pricing optimization, and assortment planning—all tasks where AI excels. AI can automate significant portions of the analytical work, generate strategic recommendations, and optimize decisions at scale. While human judgment around brand strategy and stakeholder relationships adds some complexity, one merchandiser equipped with AI tools would substantially outpace multiple unaided colleagues, placing this squarely in the very high exposure range.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What merchandising and category executives can do

  1. Check AI forecasts against your own knowledge

Use AI to draft demand forecasts and assortment plans, then test them against what you know about your stores, local seasons and customers. Spotting where the tool is wrong is a skill that stays useful.

  2. Move toward decisions and strategy

Spend less time building reports by hand and more on deciding what to range, promote or drop, and explaining why. Teams value the person who can turn analysis into a clear choice.

  3. Build supplier and buyer relationships

Negotiating terms, solving supply problems and agreeing promotions with suppliers and store teams still depends on trust between people. Put time into these relationships, and look at SkillsFuture options for data and analytics skills.
