Will AI replace multimedia and games designers in Singapore?
Generative AI tools can already produce concept art, texture variations, icons and rough layouts in moments, so a lot of the routine asset work is moving to software. Designers who work this way can produce more on their own, which will change how teams are staffed and what a junior role involves. People still decide what the product should look and feel like, judge whether it works for players or users, and fit each piece into the story, the game mechanics and the brand.
Why it scores 7
Multimedia and games designers work entirely on computers, creating digital assets and designs—a fundamentally digital product that makes them highly exposed to AI. Generative AI tools (DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion) can now directly automate asset creation, concept art, and design variations, while AI-assisted design tools significantly amplify individual productivity. However, the role retains meaningful barriers: creative vision, aesthetic judgment, understanding player psychology (in games), and integration with broader narratives and game mechanics still require human oversight and direction, preventing full automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What multimedia and games designers can do
Use AI tools for drafts and variations
Try them on the early, repetitive stages such as mood boards, rough concepts and alternate colour schemes. Keep your own time for the choices that shape the final design.
Build up your design judgement and taste
Practise explaining why one option works better than another for a particular player or audience. That reasoning is what AI output still lacks and what clients and teams rely on you for.
Learn how your work fits the whole product
Spend time with the people who write the story, build the mechanics and test with players. Designers who can connect art to gameplay and feedback are harder to replace than those who only produce assets.
