Will AI replace network and systems administrators in Singapore?
AI tools can already watch networks and servers, sort alerts, apply routine patches and suggest fixes for common faults, so much of the repetitive daily work is moving to software. People are still needed for serious outages, security decisions, and the design and planning of systems, where a wrong call can be costly and someone must be accountable. The job will change a lot, and the people who do well will spend less time on routine upkeep and more on judgement.
Why it scores 7
Network, servers and computer systems administration is fundamentally digital work with substantial automation exposure through AIOps platforms, configuration management, and AI-driven monitoring/remediation tools that handle routine tasks (alerting, patching, basic troubleshooting). However, complex incident response, security decisions, infrastructure architecture, and strategic planning still require human judgment and expertise, preventing this from reaching the 8–9 range of pure software development roles.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What network and systems administrators can do
Learn what your monitoring tools automate
Find out which alerts, patches and basic fixes are now handled automatically in your setup. Check their results often so you can spot when an automated fix goes wrong.
Move toward design and planning work
Take on tasks such as planning capacity, reviewing how systems fit together and deciding how to recover from failure. These need knowledge of your organisation that software does not have.
Build your security and incident skills
Practise leading the response when something serious breaks, and get closer to access control and risk decisions. SkillsFuture options can help you fill gaps in these areas.
