Will AI replace software developers in Singapore?
AI coding tools can already write routine code, suggest fixes for bugs and draft tests, so a lot of everyday programming is moving to software. That means one developer can often do more in the same time, and teams may need fewer people for the same output. People are still needed to decide what to build, weigh trade-offs in a system's design, check that generated code is correct and safe, and take responsibility when something goes wrong.
Why it scores 9
Software development is entirely digital work performed on computers, making it inherently high-exposure territory. AI coding assistants (Copilot, Claude, etc.) are actively reshaping the field by automating code generation, debugging, and routine implementation tasks, creating substantial productivity multipliers that reduce the number of developers needed for equivalent output. While architectural decisions and complex system design still require human judgment, the core work product is increasingly subject to AI acceleration and partial automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What software developers can do
Check AI-written code with care
Read generated code closely for hidden bugs, security gaps and poor fit with the rest of the system. Being the person who catches these problems is a skill that stays useful.
Move towards design and problem framing
Spend more effort on understanding what users and the business need, and on shaping the overall structure of a system. These judgement calls are harder for AI tools to make well on their own.
Make AI tools part of daily work
Try coding assistants on your real tasks to learn where they save time and where they mislead you. Look at SkillsFuture options to keep your skills broad as the work shifts.
