Will AI replace production engineers in Singapore?

AI will change a lot of a production engineer's desk work, but it is unlikely to replace the role on its own. Tools can already help with drafting designs, running simulations, spotting patterns in production data and suggesting ways to improve a process. A person is still needed to understand how the plant really behaves, to judge trade-offs between quality, cost, safety and delivery, and to take responsibility for changes on the shop floor.

Why it scores 7

Production engineers work primarily with digital tools (CAD, simulations, data analysis, process optimization) where AI can significantly enhance productivity through predictive modeling, generative design, and automated analysis. However, the role requires substantial domain expertise in manufacturing systems, hands-on understanding of physical constraints, and judgment in balancing competing operational objectives—factors that provide meaningful protection against full automation.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What production engineers can do

  1. Use AI for analysis and first drafts

Try AI tools on data review, simulation set-up and early design options. Always check the results against what you know about your own line and its limits.

  2. Spend more time on the shop floor

Walk the line, talk to operators and see where machines and materials behave differently from the model. This first-hand knowledge is what software cannot easily pick up.

  3. Build skills in judging trade-offs

Practise weighing output, quality, safety and cost when making changes. Be ready to explain and defend your choices to managers and teams, since people will still make the final call.
