Will AI replace web and mobile app developers in Singapore?
AI coding tools can already write a lot of routine code, suggest fixes for bugs and produce the repeated parts of an app. That means much of the day-to-day coding is moving to software, and a team may need fewer people to build the same thing. People are still needed to decide what to build, design how the pieces fit together, check that the code is safe and correct, and work out problems the tools get wrong.
Why it scores 8
Web and mobile development is 100% digital work where AI coding assistants (Copilot, Claude, etc.) directly automate routine coding, debugging, and boilerplate generation. While architecture and complex problem-solving still require human judgment, AI productivity gains mean fewer developers can deliver equivalent output, with junior developers particularly vulnerable to efficiency-driven workforce compression.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What web and mobile app developers can do
Check and test AI-written code carefully
Get used to reviewing generated code for bugs, security gaps and poor design. Employers will value developers who can catch what the tools miss.
Build skill in system design
Spend more time on how an app's parts fit together, how data moves and how it will cope as more people use it. These choices still need human judgement and are harder to automate.
Learn what users and clients really need
Practise talking to the people who will use the app and turning vague requests into clear requirements. This is work where a person who understands the context still matters, and it helps early-career developers stand out. SkillsFuture can help you find courses in this area.
